How It Works
Mazda i-ACTIV AWD® keeps reading road conditions and shifts power between the front and rear wheels to help keep traction, often before you ever notice a wheel starting to slip. On a slick morning pulling out onto Blue Lakes or climbing out of the canyon, that means a steadier, more confident start.
The honest part: AWD helps you get moving. Your tires are what help you stop and turn. AWD doesn't shorten braking distance on ice, so good tires and slower speeds still matter most.

Standard i-ACTIV AWD®
Every Mazda SUV below comes with i-ACTIV AWD® standard. The right one depends on how many people you haul and where your winter drives take you.
Tires Matter Most
Pair AWD with the right tire for how and where you drive.
Fine for mostly dry, cleared in-town roads. They lose grip once temperatures stay below freezing.
Softer rubber and deeper tread built for snow and cold pavement. Legal year-round, and a smart choice if you drive Highway 75 or I-84 in winter.
Extra bite on ice. In Idaho, studded tires are allowed October 1 through April 30 and must come off by May 1.

Cold mornings are hard on batteries. A quick test now beats a no-start in January.

Check tread depth, and check pressure often. Tire pressure drops as temperatures fall.

Fresh blades and a winter-rated washer fluid that won't freeze on the windshield.

Short winter days mean more driving in the dark. Check every bulb.

Blanket, ice scraper, small shovel, phone charger, water and snacks. Rural roads out here can be a long wait.
On the Road
A few habits make the biggest difference, whatever you drive.

Slow down and leave room. Give yourself several times your normal following distance on snow or ice.

Be gentle. Smooth steering, braking and acceleration keep your tires gripping.

Skip cruise control on slick roads so you're always in control of your speed.

Watch bridges and shaded spots. They freeze first and stay icy longer.

Check before you go. Wind and blowing snow can close stretches of I-84 and US-93. Look at Idaho 511 before longer trips.

AWD helps you accelerate without slipping, but it doesn't help you stop. For regular winter driving outside town, winter tires make the biggest difference.
Studded tires are allowed on Idaho roads from October 1 through April 30. They're not allowed from May 1 through September 30.
